If you’re passionate about wreck diving or looking to take your diving adventures to the next level, Koh Tao offers more than just stunning reefs and marine life. The island is now home to multiple artificial wrecks, including the iconic HTMS Sattakut and two exciting new additions near No Name Pinnacle and Ao Leuk (Aow Mao). These dive sites are quickly becoming must-visits for divers who want to combine exploration, history, and marine biodiversity all in one dive. Whether you’re a seasoned wreck diver or just getting started, Phoenix diving Koh Tao offers unforgettable underwater experiences. Here’s everything you need to know about the wreck diving scene on the island. HTMS Sattakut – Koh Tao’s Signature Wreck Dive The HTMS Sattakut is the most well-known wreck around Koh Tao. This 48-meter-long WWII-era naval ship was intentionally sunk in 2011 to serve as an artificial reef and dive training site. It now rests between 26–30 meters deep, making it perfect for Advanced Open Water divers or those completing a wreck or deep diving specialty course. As you explore the corridors and hull of the ship, you’ll find it teeming with marine life. Schools of snapper and fusiliers swirl around the deck, while groupers, moray eels, and giant pufferfish have made the wreck their home. The gun turrets at the bow and stern remain intact, offering unique photo ops for underwater photographers. Dive Highlights: Depth: 26–30m Level: Advanced Marine life: Groupers, barracudas, nudibranchs, lionfish Perfect for: Deep & Wreck Specialty courses New Wreck at No Name Pinnacle Near the quiet and less-dived No Name Pinnacle lies a newly sunk wreck that is quickly developing into a vibrant artificial reef. This dive site offers a slightly shallower profile than the Sattakut, making it accessible for divers who are still building their confidence with wreck penetration. Though still in the early stages of coral colonization, marine life has already started to appear. Juvenile reef fish, nudibranchs including the very photogenic Flabellina, and even occasional batfish can be spotted here. This site combines the mystery of a wreck with the peaceful atmosphere of a less-visited dive spot. Dive Highlights: Depth: ~18–22m Level: Open Water & up (depending on dive plan) Marine life: Nudibranchs, reef fish, occasional pelagics Perfect for: Wreck intro dives, underwater photography New Wreck at Ao Leuk (Aow Mao) Another exciting recent addition to Koh Tao’s dive map is the new wreck placed near Ao Leuk (also known as Aow Mao). This site is known for its clear visibility and gentle conditions, and offers Koh Tao a wreck to explore when adverse weather renders the western dive sites inaccessible. This wreck lies within recreational depths and is already attracting marine life. Coral is beginning to grow along its structure, and it serves as an excellent training site for navigation and buoyancy control around wreck environments. Dive Highlights: Depth: ~14–18m Level: Open Water and up Marine life: Butterflyfish, damselfish, baby barracuda Perfect for: First-time wreck divers, Open Water training dives Why Wreck Diving in Koh Tao Is So Unique Unlike wrecks in deeper or more technical regions, Koh Tao’s wrecks are accessible and safe for recreational divers. That makes it a great destination to learn wreck diving without needing technical certifications. The diversity of depths, structures, and surrounding marine life means there’s something for every diver. As these three main wrecks were sunk on purpose, they were sanitized before sinking, making them perfect training environments for divers of all levels. At Phoenix Divers, we offer diving courses for all levels—including Wreck Diver Specialties—so you can explore safely and confidently under expert supervision.
