A safety stop is part of conservative recreational dive planning, but it is not the same thing as a mandatory decompression stop. New divers learn the difference during formal training and practise controlled ascents under instructor supervision. What is a scuba safety stop? A safety stop is a planned pause near the end of a no-decompression dive. The exact depth and duration should follow your training, dive plan and dive computer rather than a value copied blindly from another diver. Safety stop versus decompression stop Safety stop: a conservative pause added to a dive that has remained within planned no-decompression limits. Decompression stop: a required stop generated by a decompression obligation. Recreational beginner training is designed around no-decompression diving. If your computer displays information you do not understand, follow your training and seek guidance from an instructor rather than improvising. Why controlled ascents matter Pressure decreases as a diver ascends. Your training teaches you to control ascent speed, breathe normally and monitor depth and your dive computer. A safety stop provides an opportunity to settle into a stable position before the final section of the ascent. What makes a good safety stop? The most important skill is control. Useful habits include monitoring the dive computer, staying aware of your buddy, maintaining neutral buoyancy, checking gas supply and watching surface conditions. Why shallow buoyancy can feel harder Air in your BCD and exposure suit expands as pressure decreases, so an uncontrolled rise can accelerate if expanding gas is not managed. Good divers make small adjustments early instead of waiting until they are moving quickly upward. Do you always make a safety stop? Your dive plan, training, conditions, gas supply and computer all matter. Safety comes before completing a routine exactly as planned. Follow your instructor, agency standards and dive computer.
